Solar Shades can provide a variety of benefits for your building, including keeping excess heat out of rooms, blocking harmful UV rays, and reducing energy costs due to more controlled room temperatures. If you’re thinking about putting Solar Shades in your building, selecting the right fabric is the first and most important step.

Here’s what you need to know in order to select the right shade for your space:

Fabric Openness

Openness refers to the tightness of the weave in the fabric. Openness factors range from 0% to 10%. A smaller openness factor means more privacy, heat control and glare reduction, while higher openness provides better view-through and less privacy. If maintaining your view of the outdoors is important, go with 3% openness or higher. If privacy and heat control is more important, consider using 1% openness or blackout fabrics.

Refer to the chart below to see the difference between varying levels of openness:

Fabric Openness

Dark Colors

Dark-colored fabrics provide superior glare control due to absorbing more light. They are the optimal choice when passive solar warming and glare control are desired. They also provide a crisper view-through during the daytime due to glare reduction.

Light Colors

Want to save on cooling costs? Go with a lighter fabric! Light-colored fabrics reflect more heat and allow more filtered light through. They provide more privacy at night and reduce your ability to see through during the daytime.

High Performance Fabrics

For areas that require more energy efficiency, using High Performance Fabrics can help you cut down on cooling costs. These fabrics feature an ultra-fine layer of aluminum applied to the back side of the fabric, providing the highest energy performance while reducing glare – regardless of fabric color.

Translucent and Blackout Fabrics are also available if you’re looking for complete privacy. Download our Solarity® Solar Shades Brochure to learn more!
